Thank for for your support! Please read my families "why" below!
“We have come so far, but there is still so much to do.” Is what stays with me when I think about my experience working in Oncology. Today cancer survivors are living longer and better lives because of programs focused on well-being and prevention. Education is emphasized on healthy eating, exercise, and early detection. Not to mention the increased availability of social support. Cancer treatment has advanced in areas such as targeted therapies, immunotherapy, and improvements in early detection.
However, there are still parents grieving the loss of a child, grandchildren who won’t meet their grandparents, aunts, and uncles missing from special events, spouses going through a different life than they imagined, sisters missing sisters, and friends missing their favorite phone call. There is still so much to do.
Tomorrow Sam and I are participating in our 5th Dragon Boat.
This event is important to us bc we are big advocates of “treating the whole person” when one is diagnosed with cancer or any chronic disease. This means placing special attention on lifestyle factors like diet and exercise. Along with introducing survivors to integrative medicine practices to help enhance treatment outcomes. Donations directly support these types of holistic programs.
On a personal level, Sam lost his mom to colon cancer 15 years ago. She was diagnosed when the disease had already progressed to stage 4. Her diagnosis changed the trajectory of her family life significantly. And we feel that Sam's dad may have also lived a longer and healthier life with her by his side.
When we paddle, we are doing so in memory of them. We feel they would be proud to know that we are advocating to ensure more grandparents meet their Ziggys one day.
Donations fund early detection efforts so that cancers are caught sooner, allowing for a greater chance of survival.
Thanks to your support the medical community will be able to continue improving survivorship outcomes, enhancing availability of prevention resources, and persistently furthering research in cancer prevention.
If you are able please consider donating $10 [or whatever feels comfortable to you!] to help us meet our goal before tomorrow. We will be encouraged by your support as we paddle to remember and fight for the people we love! Paddles up!
